Du Juan in Barneys New York Catalog, Summer 2008

This is why Du Juan is the Queen of editorials! She is able to make something as simple as denim jeans and t-shirts or tank tops look so fabulous. No special tricks are needed here, like fancy backgrounds, crazy makeups, fan blowing hair or bouncy jumps and acrobatics.

Every young model should tear out these sheets and use them to practice their poses in front of the mirror. And I can count seven distinct poses from this editorial set alone
alone.

Yoon Jin Wook Editorial for Korea Harper's Bazaar, January 2008

I received a couple of requests for more photos of Korean model, Yoon Jin Wook who walked for Lanvin and Bottega Veneta at the Spring/Summer 2009 Menswear show in Milan recently. Since Jin Wook has not signed with a US modeling agency yet, I had very little information to work with.

Then a reader (ChineseModels) directed me to his Korean modeling agency website, DCM Models where there are lots of high quality scans. But most of the information on the site was in Korean, which I don't understand. Anyway, after hours of trial and error, I was able to go through most of the photos and get this editorial (and a couple more to be posted in the next couple of days) for you, my dear readers.

Emma Pei Editorial for China Vogue, August 2008

Sometimes Emma Pei can look a little too young for high fashion editorials but this set (it is incomplete, I'm missing 2 photos) is simply spectacular. The makeup and hair are top notch. The set is stunning -- the narrow passage way created by the walls really work here. It adds a lot to the drama and the mood of the clothes, hair and makeup. All in all, a job well done.

Is this "Mickey Mouse ear" thing a new trend in hair fashion? I have seen quite a few of them in editorials lately. It is definitely different and high fashion but probably not very practical for every day life

Also, this is undoubtedly the BEST editorial Emma Pei has done to date. And one of the best from China Vogue.

Eugenia Mandzhieva in Nordstrom Catalog, August 2008

Eugenia Mandzhieva has two 'stories' or editorials in this month's Nordstrom catalog. The first set is spectacular, especially the close-up in photo #1. The hair and makeup in photos #2 and #3 are simply amazing. They remind me of Angelina Jolie in the St. John ads from two seasons ago. Incidentally, Eugenia was wearing a St. John (ahem! Chanel knock-off) in one of the photos.

The second editorial is so-so -- typical catalog stuff. I like her Rihanna style hair cut. It looks great on her. Eugenia has just become one of my favorite Asian models.

Stay tuned for more of Eugenia Mandzhieva's work on AMB.

Eugenia Mandzhieva & Gwen Lu Ad Campaign for Uniqlo, Fall 2008/Winter 2009

Uniqlo, the Japanese brand that is synonymous with inexpensive but high quality basics, has always used Asian models in their ads, including Japanese celebrity, (Iron Chef) Masaharu Morimoto. This season's line-up of models include Eugenia Mandzhieva (Russian) and Gwen Lu (Malaysian).

Two other Asian models whom I don't recognize are also in the Fall 2008/Winter 2009 ad campaign. Does anyone know who those two models are?

Yoon Jin Wook at Bottega Veneta, Spring/Winter 2009 Runway Show in Milan

I have received numerous e-mails over the last month asking me to ID this model who walked for the Bottega Veneta, Spring/Summer 2009 show in Milan recently. Someone told me it was Yoon Jin Wook (윤진욱), a Korean male model.

Does anyone know which agency he belong to?

Liu Dan in Nordstrom Catalog, January 2008

This is Liu Dan's third appearance in a Nordstrom's catalog this year. The company must really love her. But then again, what's not to love -- she's gorgeous and versatile. The first two photos are spectacular; the rest are above average catalog stuff.

Catalog shoots are the bread and butter of most working models. They pay really well, sometimes as much as $3,000/day for brands like JCrew and Ann Taylor or stores like Macys and Nordstrom. In addition, there are so many catalog shoots that a successful catalog model can book a job almost every month. Magazine covers and editorials, on the other hand, are great for recognition and exposure but they rarely pay more than $300/day, even for top-notch magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
